.tokyo leads all other “dot cities” in monthly traffic visits to all domains within the TLD. The .tokyo TLD receives over 84M visits per month compared to its nearest competitor .london at 34M visitors per month - over twice as many. .istanbul is third with 26M visitors, .nyc with 18M and .vegas rounds out the top 5 at 16M visitors. .berlin, .taipei, .paris, .moscow and .madrid round out the top 10. The table below shows the distribution of domains that register traffic statistics for September 2023 based upon data from similarweb.com and analysis by John Matson Consulting.

The table below also includes the percent of domains in the TLD’s zone file that registered measurable traffic as well as a ratio of visits per population. Within the top 10, .paris and .london have the highest percents measured at 7.2% and 6.6% respectively. .vegas leads visits per population with 25.2 per distantly followed by .tokyo at 6.0 and .taipei at 5.3. The .vegas visits/pop is caused by a popular “unblockit” website that redirects out of .vegas to the .esq TLD.

Thirty-five global cities applied to ICANN in 2012 Round 1 for a new gTLD and have been since delegated. .tokyo not only leads in the category of monthly traffic, it also leads in the number of websites that generate traffic between 5K and 100K visitors per month. Over 900 websites for .tokyo generate between 5,000 and 100,000 visitors each month. .nyc, .berlin and .london make up the next group with approximately 3o0 websites generating similar traffic.

The .london TLD is interesting in that only 20% of its total traffic (orange line in graph) is generated from these core websites due to one site football.london generating over 19M monthly visits alone. That brings up the question of what are the most highly trafficked websites across all the dot city New gTLDs? football.london is city TLD website with the highest traffic at 19M visits per month. “football.london is the first 24/7, fan-led resource for the capital's clubs.” according to the website. Other examples are gov.taipei at 7.8M visitors which hosts the City Government of Taipei and comunidad.madrid at 7.2M visitors connecting to important government, social and job services.
